Exporting ChatGPT Chats for Research and Citation

February 2, 20266 min read

A citation needs a stable artefact. Share links are not stable — they can be revoked at any time by whoever created them, which makes them a poor reference in a paper or an audit trail.

Why a PDF is the right container

PDFs pin pagination, which means a quotation can be cited by page. They embed their own typography so the document reads identically in ten years. And they can be hashed, which matters when provenance is contested.

Recording the provenance

Each exported document carries the conversation title, the generation timestamp and the source link. Together those three facts let a reader reconstruct where the content came from even if the original page is gone.

Practical habits

A few conventions make an archive usable a year later.

  • Export at the end of a session rather than months later
  • Keep the model name in the conversation title
  • Store exports alongside the prompts that produced them
  • Never rely on a share link as your only copy
